Book Review: Time Reavers by Jacob Holo

The monsters are real, and time is their weapon.

Fed up with bad teachers and daily fights with her sister, sixteen-year-old Nicole Taylor yearns for something better. Sadly, she’s in for a letdown, because the world ends next week.

Nicole discovers she has a rare gift. She can bend time around her and even stop it completely. With her powers awakening, she must face the Reavers: horrific killing machines that exist outside our time.

Plagued with nightmares and ambushed by monsters at every turn, Nicole has one chance to stop their genocidal invasion. With help from a chain-smoking pyrokinetic, a neurotic sword-wielding assassin, and an icy goth chick with a crossbow, she may stand a chance.

But the Reavers are tireless foes, and Time is on their side.

During a visit to Russia with school, Nikole discovers that she can bend time, but that there are monsters waiting for her: the Reavers.

I had high hopes for this book. The premises seemed interesting, but I had serious issues with its execution. It happens to me sometimes with YA books. Either the author blows me away with amazing characters or I find it very difficult to taking interest in the story. On this occasion I was not able to connect to the characters, they were one-dimensional and almost archetypical. Even though this is a fantasy book I found some of the situations not very realistic. I found difficult to believe that after the girls’ trip to Russia, their parents were nowhere to be seen.

I also had issues with descriptions of places, people, and events. Things seemed to happen one after the other, but we did not get a lot of aside information to complement the main action. I understand this is a style choice, but this was just not for me.

Due to the issues I found I lost interest in the story and the characters.

Tess Irondale’s narration was quite good, with a decent voice range and amazing character interpretations. I think her British accent could be improved, but for the rest it was great. There were no issues with the audio production.

I think this book can work among a younger public, which will care more about action and less about details.
